How to Check When Was a Web Site Last Updated

It is vital to know that the website from which you are acquiring data, especially statistics is updated and has "currency". This is very important if you are involved in educational research. Your research paper or assignment may be discredited if you have included old statistics and information.

Most websites mention the dates when they were updated, modified, or changed but some of them don’t follow this procedure. The date is usually at the bottom of the page. You can easily find these dates by the RATS technique. RATS’ means: Read All the Screen. You just have to look through all the data being shown and the clusters of ads and like the famous Sherlock Holmes, find your required information that in this case is the "Date". But for the webpages which are nonconforming to this voluntary procedure, you can determine the date and time by using one of the following methods.

Method 1 - Internet Explorer Method

All you need to do is open the Webpage for which you want to get the information and type (copy/paste will also work) the following in the address bar by overwriting the original address:

javascript:alert(document.lastModified)

Now Press Enter and a new mini window will open up showing you the update information

This method works only in I.E. in my experience.

I don’t know why but this solution doesn't work in Chrome Browser and Firefox. I think this is because the address bar in Google Chrome and Firefox are actually also a search bars.

(Looks like we found a use of Internet Explorer after all)

Method 2 - Mozilla Firefox Method

In Firefox, you can go to Tools->Page Info to see the date of last modification of that particular page in the "Modified" field.
